State of Origin leaps into 3D
The 2010 State of Origin series will be telecast in
3D.
The 3D viewing experience is about to make the leap into lounge rooms for this year's State of Origin rugby
league matches.
All three games between NSW and Queensland will be filmed in 3D format, the Nine Network said in a statement on
Tuesday.
It will be the first time a sporting event has been broadcast live using 3D technology for free-to-air
television.
Viewers will need wireless-enabled, active shutter glasses to watch the games, which most TV manufacturers
consider optimum for domestic use.
"It's early days of course because the technology is still developing, and its availability to consumers right
now is limited," Nine's CEO David Gyngell said.
Communications Minister Stephen Conroy said the State of Origin would give Australian viewers their first
glimpse of 3D television.
"This trial broadcast will demonstrate the potential of 3D TV and the enhancements enabled by digital
technology," Senator Conroy said in the Nine statement.
NRL chief executive David Gallop said 3D would "bring a new level of the toughness, excitement, speed and skill
of rugby league into the homes of viewers through one of our game's showcase series".
The first and third State of Origin matches between NSW and Queensland kick off at ANZ Stadium in Sydney on May
26 and July 7.
The second game is in Brisbane on June 16.
