Samsung 3D TV Glasses: SSG-2200AR

Samsung’s nifty new 3D TV glasses for its 3D LED TV, 3D LCD TV and 3D Plasma TV sets will cost you a pretty penny if bought alone and you won’t be able to use them with other 3D TV brands.

3D Glasses Samsung Electronic Shutter

Samsung electronic shutter 3D TV glasses (SSG-2200) will come in three versions: One powered with a replaceable coin-sized battery ($150), another with an internal rechargeable battery ($200) and a smaller set of rechargeable glasses for children ($180). Note, however, that two pairs of glasses and a 3D Blu-ray movie come free with each new Samsung 3D TV.

Since Samsung 3D LED TV and 3D LCD TV sets provide a 240Hz refresh rate, the glasses refresh at half that rate (120Hz) because they synchronize to 3D content by alternately closing and opening each side. A Samsung representative explained that plasma screens do not refresh the image the same way as LCD and LED panels, but the same Samsung 3D TV glasses will provide an identical 3D viewing experience.

The Samsung 3D TV glasses power up with the touch of a button and power down after a minute after you fold the arms. The battery model is said to offer about 400 hours of use between batteries, while the rechargeable units should be charged fully before watching an average-length movie, a Samsung representative said.

At a demonstration during Tuesday’s press event, four blocks of Samsung 3D TV sets were stacked three across and three high. The 3D effect with made-for 3D movies, like a trailer for DreamWorks’s “How to Train Your Dragon,” were impressive. The Samsung 3D glasses synched after a few seconds and the viewing experience was comfortable and without flicker.

Samsung representatives noted that the company's proprietary technology will only work with its own TV sets; thus if you want to watch content on another brand of 3D TV, you’ll need to buy 3D TV glasses that work with that brand.
